COMBINATOIRE : the “GEPHI & DOT” age (V4)

by [PH]

For over a decade, I’ve been mapping my social information flow network. This map, entitled “Combinatoire ou la Hiérarchie des Réseaux” has been rendered trough hierarchical layout, using open-source tools such as graphviz and more specificaly the dot engine and language. Those were the most advanced tools when i began using them. Now, while those are still weapon of choice when one needs to render directed data flow and put the emphasis on “power trough direction”, some very efficient and practicle new engines can be used to layout graph in a more organic way. The Version 4 of my map will feature renders using both DOT and GEPHI engines processed files. GEPHI is a GUI software and simulation engine to model complex graph and manipulate connected data in a confortable and user friendly way.

Mail Forward Map V2.62

by [PH]

// Combinatoire ou la hierarchie des reseaux
// Mail Forward Map V2.62
// 21/09/2011

The last (but not least) version of the social network map that i’ve been working on for the last decade. Every single person who sent me a multirecipent e.mail is listed in this map as a red dot. The blue dots are actual e.mail and the yellow dots depicts my position in the cloud.

This update features two renders : a classic hierarchical one and a community structure optimised one.

The maps are rendered using the dot & sfdp engines, part of graphviz software distribution.

Mail Forward Map V2.61

A 50 mail update to the map. Despite the small amount of info added by this update, it changes the map layout a lot. They are some update policy that i have been using since the beginning of the project that this update helps to pinpoint as artifacts. I would like to delete/reduce the impact of those artifacts by no longer considering single e.mails as nodes … because if this is done, it only adds to the graph ‘s complexity and prevent to clearly render its depth … i will now consider and rework the base file in accordance with those observations … all links will be between persons. no matter if the connection has been used once or more … Every person can only appear once as “emitter” in the source file, no matter how many time or what group of people that person sent mail to. This modification of the database organisation (source file) is a mean of simplification and is a more accurate answer to the initial project direction : render connection, between individual, built by information exchanges.

Hint : red dots = people / blue dots = mail / yellow dots = me / people are ordinated by activity from bottom to top. The more mail they send to the pool and the earlyer and often they take part in the chain, the upper in the map and its hyerarchy they are.

Where am i in the network? People send me e.mail and don’t even know who am i and sometimes i don’t know who they are. when i browse the mail list of unhidden message recipient field, i usually find names of addresses that means something to me but mostly coming from unknown senders. How did they get my mail and how did they ever came to the point that i could be interested? Do they even know who i am, who are the other recipient? This tells a lot on information and more on information network. What is the point? This is some anti-facebook. An un-friendlist.

“Technique is just a mean of arriving to a statement” (Jackson Pollock,1950)

The map is rendered from a dot language file built up from mail i received and compiled into a png file using graphviz.

Mail Forward Map V2.60

Yet another update to the map of 2009. 100+ addresses and 5 nodes have been added. A lot of evolution in the network is visible around the Gmail address. Actually, this one has been my main address for quite a long time and is more often used than any other. Also note that my wife contributes a lot to the experiment by providing some chained mail to the map.

The current layout is yet quite graphically elegant but lacks clarity. The next update will introduce a new rendering method … much more CPU expensive but clearer to read.
