“Look closely at the most embarrassing details and amplify them.”
(Brian ENO & Peter SCHMIDT - Oblique Strategies Fifth edition.)
My distrust in black and white photography led me to get more and more involved into it … The book by Jun’Ichiro Tanizaki is a perfect example of the quest i endeavoured… I work in an appreciation of shadow and subtlety. And this is not an easy path to take ! I had and still have to experiment it again and come back to color later … there is a lot to tell about it and a lot to do to prevent easy emotion and eye candy to lead such photography in the decorative field rather than the emotional and semantic to wish i feel it should belong.
Look at my skin !
Photographic work is for me rather the result of the encounter between what i pictured and what i saw … yet the camera is a key element to this dialogue but its also a rather trivial since i don’t publish raw footage and select the pictures i feature on my folio. This series aims to portrait people with very close footage from their face. My Olympus camera is a “shitty” piece of hardware and don’t focus well at short distance. The resulting pictures are thus very raw looking but have yet a fleshy and intimist look that is not the result of any “tool mastering” but rather an evidence to comfort my photographic practice in the way i orient it. Towards people and not machine; towards the subject rather than towards the viewer, the audience!
